Apple iOS 4.2 Reduces Network Congestion: Nokia
Apple iOS 4.2.1 update for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad has been in news lately for a bunch of new features that were mentioned publicly. However, we know little about several hidden enhancements made by Apple to make the iOS platform devices work better than ever. As per DailyTech, Nokia Siemens Networks has stated in official blogpost that iOS 4.2 update reduces the cellular network congestion with Network Controlled Fast Dormancy Technology.

Apple was reportedly gearing up for its lawsuit battle against Nokia but before any legal moves took place, Nokia came up with this blogpost applauding Apple and praised the use of Network Controlled Fast Dormacy Technology (NCFD). The NCFD Technology is developed by Nokia Siemens Networks to reduce network congestion. For that the smartphone is kept in an intermediate state instead of switching between always active or idle on the cellular network. Smartphones can wake up quickly from this intermediate state compared to waking up from idle state. That means a faster response and a longer battery life.

NCFD technology is also helpful for reducing the number of signals required to start a data connection on smartphone and cellular network. Nokia claimed that new iOS 4.2.1 update supports NCFD technology and thereby improved the battery life of the smartphone. Furthermore, Nokia stated that testing in North America found that Nokia Siemens Network technology based networks generate up to 50 percent less smartphone signalling.

Back in July, Apple had held a special conference to address the antennae issue in iPhone 4. But after that, the entire antenna-gate issue was doubted as a media blowout gig. Later, as a part of damage control, a report stated that poor network coverage on iPhone devices wasn't entirely Apple's fault.

Obviously AT&T wouldn't agree to that since chief technology officer John Donovan told The Wall Street Journal that AT&T network engineers flew down to Apple headquarters back in March.

It looks like Nokia is helping Apple improve iPhone 4's image after the major antenna-gate issue it faced. Also, it is a smart way to tell Apple that the iPhones work better with Nokia Siemens Network so let's avoid the legal battle and work together.

Now I wonder if Apple will acknowledge Nokia Siemens' humble mention or will continue the legal battle of patent infringement in court.
