10:20 AM Can the Google Nexus S Really Record HD Videos?
Are you ogling over the Nexus S as much as we are? The contoured AMOLED display, Android 2.3, futuristic tech like NFC, LED flashlight (!)...there are so many things that our eyes were devouring over the official specification sheet on the Nexus S page, till we got stumped at this little detail. Under "Cameras and Multimedia", it says that the back-facing 5 mega-pixel camera records videos at 720 x 480 pixel resolution. It took us back to our days when we were trained to be Reviewers in the cold Siberian forest where we had to memorize this a thousand times over - 720 x 480 pixels ain't HD! Wikipedia defines HD has "any video system of higher video resolutions than standard defintion (SD) resolutions, and most commonly refers to 1280 x 720 pixels".
While what the Nexus S says it supports is something between Standard-definition and Hi-Def; called ED or Enhanced Definition. 720 x 480 pixels is more commonly known as 480p - a standard used by DVDs. So, either one of two things is happening - the Nexus S supports 480p and Google is lying through its teeth in its features page where it says it is "capable of taking HD videos" or, it's a simple mis-type.
