5:11 PM Google to Speed Up the Web with New Image Format
![]() Internet search giant Google plans to speed up the overall page-load times by the use of a new image format. Called WebP, these images are lighter than JPEGs, an image format that's commonly used on every electronic device with a screen today. A side-by-side comparison reveals a file size reduction by an average of 39 percent, without affecting its quality. That's saying a lot, and whether those claims are true will be left to the judgement of the individual's eye. You can see for yourself by going through their gallery page that puts JPEGs and converted WebP images side by side. To our eye, there doesn't seem to be that big a degradation of quality.
So, how does this speed up the Internet? Krishnendu Choudhary, one of the developers of the technology from the Google Bangalore center told reporters, "Since 65 per cent of web traffic comprises of images, WebP would make the web faster. The degree of compression is adjustable. So, a user can choose the trade-off between file size and image quality". As an Indian, it's also good to know that three of the five brainiacs who worked on this format are from the Motherland. The WebP format works with Google's Chrome browser. And since it is an open-source project, others would be able to provide compatibility to this format without having to pay a royalty fee. A 40 percent reduction in file size sounds really good for mobile phones that are generally strapped for bandwidth as compared to wired broadband connections. Plus, you might care for that minute quality loss on a big screen, but on a phone, I guess not. The acceptance of this format remains to be seen. Given the Google backing though, we wouldn't be wrong to assume that it would help the proliferation though.
