11:13 AM Jobs, Murdoch Join Forces for iPad Newspaper
Worldwide media conglomerate News Corporation, headed by Rupert Murdoch, is joining forces with Apple to release a digital newspaper for the iPad. Christened Daily, the iPad based newspaper will be released for U.S. citizens by early next year. Touted to be the first newspaper designed for a tablet, the Daily will sell for 99 cents (Rs. 45 approx.) for a week worth of news. The newspaper will be distributed electronically to the iPad and it is said that it will be exclusive to Apple's tablet, with no separate print or online editions. Daily aims to bring "a tabloid sensibility with a broadsheet intelligence" to the iPad, which prima facie seems to hint towards the same brand of tabloid journalism that most of Murdoch's media entities are infamous for. There's enough reason to believe that since few of the 100 journalist hired for this digital newspaper include Pete Picton, an online editor from the Sun, employed as one of three managing editors. A paid electronic news service may sound unfeasible, but the same logic may not apply here, as platform makes all the difference. While everyone expects news for free on the Internet, the iPad is a medium where the target demographic values convenience and exclusivity over value. There are rumours that Jobs may personally make himself available during the launch of the Daily, so that just may seal the deal for Apple fanatics.
