10:54 AM Jumo: Social Network for Social Activism
Chris Hughes, co-founder of Facebook, has launched a new social network with a different take - social activism. In an interview with NY Times, Hughes stated that Jumo is intended to help people discover the social causes that matter to them, and along with friends, deepen their ties with those causes. You and your friends can connect with non-profit organizations for raising funds collectively and more efficiently to deal with social causes. Anyone can get started with a Facebook account and create a profile based on preliminary survey.
Chris Hughes is said to be the guy who helped build an online presence and community for US President Barrack Obama. Jumo is meant to connect non-profit organizations with meager or no social media expertise to individuals who wish to help out for social causes. The word Jumo means to come together. Registrants can discover, follow and support the social causes that interests them and also their friends, family and colleagues Participation goes beyond monetary donation and people can offer their skills to non-profit organizations to reach out to larger masses. Users need to login with their Facebook ID, then after a quick survey, organizations will be suggested based on their or friends interests. This start up is very similar to causes.com.
Here in India, we already have www.karmayog.com operational since 2005, which is very similar to both Jumo and causes.com. Whether it's about helping stop child labor or making primary education available in rural areas, pretty much everything will be covered under Jumo social network. Hughes aims to help smaller charities and non-profit bodies to make the best of this platform that seeks users from one of the most popular social networks - Facebook. Also, non-profits with tax-exempt status (in US) can solicit donations. HIV/AIDS, potable drinking water, breast cancer and primary education remain the top social causes. More would be added when the social network comes out of the beta stage.
