Move Pushes 4.1 Million Units: Sony

Not long after the sales figures of Microsoft's Kinect motion controller were released, Sony has issued a press release with the sales numbers for its own Move motion controller. Sony's release pegs the Move sales at 4.1 million units in the two months since it was launched. However, what's noteworthy is that these numbers do not represent actual end-user sales of the product, but the units shipped to stores.

Considering the tendency of retailers to stock up on such product launches, the actual sales figures are still open to conjecture. Another factor to consider is that, unlike the Kinect, users require to purchase multiple units to enable multiplayer gaming, so that slots the actual number of households adopting the Move to an even lower number. Furthermore, 75 percent of the U.S. sales figures constitute bundles, either consoles paired with the move or the same sold along with games.
Reaching a real conclusion on the success of any of the rival motion controllers would be premature, because although they have both hit their sales targets, there still aren't any compelling titles for either of them. Pure numbers point towards the Kinect selling faster, but all it takes is one big software title to tilt the favour towards any of them.

Only time will tell if these motion controllers remain just a passing fad, or really click as serious modes of gaming. Whatever the outcome, the Kinect will continue to be relevant thanks to the collective might of the open source community.
