Finally, the official Google Voice App has made its way into the Apple App Store for U.S. region. Oh yeh, Google Voice is currently available only for U.S.-based iPhone users. All Google Voice account user who own an iPhone can download the free Google Voice app from the App Store (iTunes Link). Google already offers HTML5 powered web app for the iOS platform. Now with the native iPhone App, Google Voice users will be able to get Voice mail transcripts, make cheaper voice calls, free SMS to U.S.-based numbers and of course, use Google Voice number.
In late September, we reported about Google working on the Google Voice App's compatibility and multi-tasking capabilities with the iOS 4.0 update. Hence, now the Google Voice App for iPhone is available for the devices running iOS 3.1 update or higher. Almost a year ago, Apple had rejected Google Voice App for iPhone on the grounds of "duplicating iPhone features" and got into troubled waters with the FCC inquiry. Take a look at the features offered by the Google Voice App. The release notes: - Access your Google Voice account right from your iPhone. - Receive push notifications for new text or voicemail messages. - Send free text messages to U.S. numbers - Make international calls at cheap rates. - Listen to your voicemail, read transcripts and manage your Google Voice inbox. - Display your Google Voice number as caller ID when making calls. - Call contacts from your iPhone Address Book or enter new numbers on the dialpad. - A Google Voice account is required to use this app. To sign up go to www.google.com/voice. - Google Voice is only available in the United States. - The app is free, and is available now on the App Store. Google Voice is still limited to U.S. and as of now, Google has no plans to expand the service to rest of the world. | |
