4:45 PM Samsung Showcases 70-inch 3D TV | |
Samsung has released what it claims to be the world's first and largest 3D Ultra Definition (UD) TV. The 3D TV spans a mind bending 70 diagonal inches, and sports a resolution of 240Hz, which is needed for 3D capability. The TV will still require 3D glasses, which seem to be of the active shutter type. However, no concrete information is forthcoming, so let's not jump the gun till this display is showcased tomorrow at Flat Panel Display International 2010.
It's touted to be the first LCD based on oxide semiconductor technology, which gives it incredibly high pixel density. The 3D LCD TV sports a resolution of 3840x2160 pixels, which is a whopping 8 megapixel. Full-HD (1080p) LCD owners will vouch for the disadvantages of having high resolution displays, due to the inability of low resolution movies to scale well to size of the larger displays. So unless Samsung's TV works equally well below its native resolution (which is rare for a per pixel display like LCD), even your prized Blu-ray collection will appear pixelated on the 70-inch display. Since the display isn't out to the public, there is no information on price or a release date yet.
