Tomb Raider: Underworld was a very fine game, striking a perfect balance between the old school hardcore puzzles and a new fangled narrative of the Crystal Dynamics reboot. A tight release schedule resulted in a buggy release that took some sheen off its otherwise brilliant pedigree. However, before gamers could display any signs of fatigue, Eidos stirred things up with a fundamental departure in the Tomb Raider series with Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.
The commercial success of Guardian of Light has apparently prompted the Square Enix (and not Eidos this time) to announce the much rumoured reboot to the Tomb Raider franchise. Titled simply as Tomb Raider, the reboot deviates from the core storyline by rewriting the origins of Lara Croft. The game is again developed by Crystal Dynamics, who took over from Core Design since the Tomb Raider: Legend reboot.
Fans of the franchise will remember how Lara becomes the professional she is today after crashing into the Himalayas as per to the existing Tomb Raider mythos. The reboot re-imagines that part with a very young Lara shipwrecked on an unknown island - broken and hardened at the same time by circumstances that see her pushed to the very precipices of survival. This is a slight deviation from the earlier leaked brief, dating back to 2009, portraying the 'unknown' island mentioned in the press release as a "remote island hidden off the shores of Japan".
Stalked by bizarre and seemingly mutated entities inhabiting the island, the reboot chronicles the transformation of Lara from the hunted to the hunter; from a frightened young girl to the intrepid adventurer that we know. The press release elaborates, "Forget everything you know about Tomb Raider, we are exploring things that have never been done before in this game. This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other." Pay attention to the release pictures and you can see that the shipwreck reads 'Endurance', which pretty much portends the core survival emphasis of the game.
Going by the unverified concept art, which has now gained credibility thanks to art on Game Informer's exclusive reveal cover, this time around Lara may have very limited ballistic weapons at her disposal. The concepts showed her using bow and arrow, with a pistol tucked away as well, so we're guessing this will be a survival affair that'll see Lara pull a McGuyver and Crusoe with a focus on fashioning weapons out of whatever she can salvage from the shipwreck and her hostile environment, in addition to modern equipment she recovers. Rumours also suggest an increased emphasis on melee and one-on-one combat.
old school Lara Croft fans, we hope the reboot retains the meticulous puzzles that have always been the hallmark of the franchise. The gritty survival feel of putting a young and vulnerable Lara as the underdog does seem quite interesting. Only time will tell if the new direction manages to get more fans to the series. I guess that also means we will have an underage Lara Croft model for a change this time around. What your take on this new direction? Do let us know in the comments section below. | |
