Nearly seven lakh tourists, both domestic and foreign, visited various monuments in Agra, including the Taj Mahal, in October when the country hosted the Commonwealth Games.
Minister of State for Tourism Sultan Ahmed, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, said that a total of 5,55,352 domestic visitors and 1,29,390 foreigners visited the "centrally protected ticketed monuments at Agra, including the Taj Mahal" in October this year. During the same period last year, 4,80,789 domestic tourists and 1,12,371 foreigners visited Agra. The jump in the numbers is 91,582. Quoting figures from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Ahmed said that in 2009, the 16th century monument attracted 5,81,418 international visitors, while their number was 5,09,681 in 2008 and 6,13,706 in 2008. |
