11:54 AM Caution needed for children vaccination |
Vaccination, perhaps as recalled by most in our growing years, seems little more than a series of painful injections that leave either sore arms or a row of walling kids dreading the sight of needles. The role of vaccination in reducing the diseases burden and suffering has been dramatic. Control, over polio, measles, diphtheria, pertussis (Whooping Cough), rubella (German measles), mumps, tetanus and Hemophiles influenzas type b (Hib) owe their trump to the discovery of vaccines. Vaccination in children is often associated with sore swelling, fever and fussiness, so it should be followed up with proper care and medication as it most often induces fever and pain. According to World Health Organization and The American Academy of Pediatrics, Paracetamol is the first-line treatment for fever and pain in children. Paracetamol is considered to be the safest alternative to symptom of pain and fever arising out of vaccination as against other NSAIDs medicines. Side-effects associated with these medicines have been counter as hepatitis, abdominal problems, nausea, vomiting and fatigue. Children being naturally sensitive to many drugs than adults, the medicines should be administrated with care and after proper study of the cases. According to Dr Sanjeev Bagai (Padamshree), Sr Paediatrician, Rockland Hospital, New Delhi, "Here, there are several drugs belonging to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) category that are available for fever and pain. But Paracetamol is the optimum fever and pain reliever in children since it does not cause any of the side effects associated with the use of NSAIDs.” Examples of these drugs are ibuprofen (Brufen, Ibugesic, Cinbufalm), Nimesulide (Nise, Nimulide, sumo) Diclofenan (Voveran, Diclowin,) Naproxen (Artagen, Naprosyn), Indomethacin (Indocap, Microcid), and Aspirin (Ecosprin, Disprin, colsprin). Nevertheless, the paradox of matter remains that most NSAIDS are associated with dreaded side effects in children, for instances aspirin causes the dreaded Reye’s syndrome characterized by lethargy, disorientation, hostility, inability to recognize family members and incessant screaming. Nimesulide can predispose to acute liver inflammation and injury and lbuprofen, Diclofenace as well as Mefenamic acid can causes high degree of burning pain in the upper abdomen, nausea, vomiting loss of fatigue. As Dr Bagai says, "After vaccination, majority of children face local pain and redness at the site of injection along with high chances of developing malaise and fever. In this regard, Paracetamol with its tested safety record, is the first choice for treating theses symptoms. Paracetamol like Crocin Drops, Crocin Syrup during the course of influenza vaccine shows a significantly greater reduction in complaints of sore arm and nausea without affecting the antibody response to the vaccine.”
