Mark Twain once said, "Books are for people who wish they were somewhere else.” While one would hardly disagree with that, it is interesting to see how a lot of people are looking out for that designated space that can help them move into a world of imagination.
Irrespective of size, finding space for a home library has become an integral part of setting up a home. From choosing the right theme, lighting, type of book shelf, the right carpet — every detail is as important as the books themselves. And if you are looking for some tips, here’s expert insight from interior designer and entrepreneur Beena Patre... Go for a theme Choosing the right theme for your library is very important. If you own a classic home, a Spanish, French or Victorian styled library is your best bet. With similar wallpapers and flooring, it will add a touch of class. For the contemporary home, opt for stylised glass shelves and make the room look trendy. One can even opt for open shelves and accessorise with trendy bookends. On the shelf Libraries should always look serene. While choosing your book shelf, keep in mind the theme. A wooden book shelf is the safest option. However, glass shelves allow light to filter through and that gives a dramatic visual of the collection too. Add small lights at corners, both for practical and design purposes. Rockin’ time A study table placed by a window is an ideal choice. Decorate your table with ornate pieces, like a quaint flow lamp. Team that with an easy, rocking chair with a suspended flow lamp. Colour palette Choose a subtle colour of paint for the walls, as dark colours prevent natural light from seeping in. For the flooring, choose a rich Persian carpet for a classic theme or a graphic one for a contemporary theme. Light art A marriage of natural and artificial lighting works best. While natural lighting is always advisable, artificial ones can be used to draw attention to specific objects. |
