Dumped? Now Claim Palimony!
Live-in relationships come with a bag of uncertainty. What if things don't turn out like you planned? What if you both start to get on each other's nerves a couple of years down the line? What if the relationship is going nowhere and you have to call it quits? Well, the Supreme Court seems to understand your plight too and has now proposed entitlement of alimony (spousal support) for women in live-in relationships, except it's known as "palimony" (for pal/ partner not spouse)!

In a Tamil Nadu case where a married man refused to pay maintenance to his mistress after spending 14 years with her, Justice Markandeya Katju pointed out, "Why is a woman who has spent her life with a man, denied this right?"

It's not yet been made official. So while that's being decided, we can't help but have mixed feelings about this proposition. Here's why…

Why we like it:

1.Married men will think twice before having affairs. After all, he'd have to pay alimony one way or another!

2.The proposal makes a live-in partner equal to a wife and thus, entitles her to maintenance. So now women would only have to deal with the emotional aspect of a broken relationship rather than the financial aspect too.

Why we don't like it:

1. Boyfriends would run a mile, afraid of a law suit after just a couple of months.

2.Women (who today are very financially independent) would become overly dependent too soon in a relationship because the law gives them the right to "palimony".

3.If clauses aren't specified, men would go bankrupt for all the one night stands they've had tongue
