This capital city of Sikkim, lies at an altitude of about 1780 m above sea level. Over years, Gangtok has grown into an attractive tourist destination reflecting, a unique ambience derived from its perfect blend of tradition and modernity. The unspoilt natural beauty of Gangtok and its peaceful Stupas, some breathtaking views of Himalayas and Kanchenjunga, (the second highest peak in the world), Gangtok has plenty to offer a truly unique experience to anyone visitng the place. • How to reach: The airport and the railway station nearest to the hill resort of Gangtok are at Siliguri. - By Air : Nearest airport to Gangtok is in Bagdogra in North Bengal. The distance between the two cities is around 124 Km. A helicopter service is also provided by the Sikkim Helicopter Services which connects Gangtok to Siliguri. - By Road: Gangtok is well connected with Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Siliguri by NH 31 and private buses, coaches, taxis and jeeps run all day round between Gangtok and nearby cities. - By Rail: New Jalpaiguri is the closest railway station to Gangtok at a distance of 125 km. There are regular trains from different parts of the country to New Jalpaiguri and after reaching this place further journey can be done by private buses, cars or taxis. • Places near by: Gangtok is a wonderful tourist destination with monasteries and adventures all around. Some of the most visited tourist spots are as follows: - Enchey Monastery: The city is a centre of Buddhist learning and culture, the most famous Buddhist site being the Enchey Monastery. This 200 years old monastry, is one of the oldest in Sikkim, which stands 3kms away from the city centre. The Monastery is said to have been erected on the spot blessed by Lama Druptab Karpo, who was a great 'tantrik' master renowned for his flying powers. It is advisable to visit this monastery during December because Lamas perform religious masked dances for these 2 days, portraying different mythological stories. - Namgyal Research Institute of Tibetology: It is a famous institute built in 1958 and is a research center for Mahayana Buddhism and Tibetan culture. Tourists can also buy Buddhist religious books and other objects of craft from here. - Kechopari Lake: The meaning of 'Kechopari Lake' is 'wishing lake.' Cryastal clear water of the lake, all surrounded by dense forests and wild life, make it a famous tourist destination for all those visiting Gangtok. - Changu Lake: 35km from Gangtok, Changu Lake, With an average depth of 50 ft, is situated at an altitude of 12,000 ft, on the Nathu-la highway. This is something which you should not miss out. There is also a small temple of Lord Shiva on the lakeside. Primulae flowers and other alpine vegetation make the surroundings even more beautiful. Government has recently opened this lake for tourists but, due to security reasons cameras are not allowed on this route. • Best time to visit Mid- February To May End & Mid - September To December |
