Hot Careers: Furniture Design

The constant drift of professional interests, starting from designing shoes, bags to jewelleries and finally confining to furniture designing has been quite an eventful journey for the 26-year-old Priyanka. The vivid manifestation of her classy, semi-classy and retro collection has come out well through her fluid, comma and arch-square home-décor pieces.

Shifting focus
While flipping through the product designing course curriculum at Raffles Design International College, Priyanka realised the sudden desire to pursue her career along the same line. “The beaded jewellery that I used to make never gave me the satisfaction. I wanted to create something big for an even bigger space. I grew up imagining designing industrial models,” says the vivacious designer. Referring the outcome of fashion designing to be short-lived, she detests the concept of models walking the ramp with designer wear on. “I like the lengthier procedure in imagining things, drawing layouts and seeing the 3D version. A lot of volume attracts me,” exclaims the young artist.

Getting recognised
Getting rewarded under the student category by the reputed EDIDA Awards (2008) brought her a step closer to her dream destination, Pallate. Initially serving as a freelancer, Priyanka was later offered the prestigious in-house designer’s position by Pallate in 2009. Soon after, she started putting her thoughts together and came up with her exclusive collection in April 2010. “Being a new entrant and directing 40 other carpenters with over 14 years of experience was quite daunting,” states Priyanka.

Creative mind
“It was a tough proposition to create a design which Pallate didn’t have, mostly when it had possibly all the leading designer brands,” she adds. In no time, the regular blacks and maroons were replaced by her fluid collection, where the designs floated in colourful wavy patterns. This brought a fresh appeal from the mundane squares and rectangles. Besides working with the fabrics and colour selection, she lavishly fitted 22ct golden legs. “People would fancy in owning furniture with a piece of gold in it and I have conveniently used this concept in my collection here,” giggles Priyanka.

Personal space
No matter how ambitious she is by virtue, Priyanka still believes in having a cosy corner at home where she could spend lone time with her pets; a comfortable job schedule and prefers having the old classy wooden furniture in her bedroom. She concludes, “Designing never limits you to one thing, there’s always enough scope to design anything and everything. Till the time there’s something new to learn, designing is a never-ending process and I am always eager to take up challenges."
