It used to be embarrassing — to be spotted in a pair of plain glasses that doctors forced us to wear. Girls and even boys would take them off, when it came to looking ‘cool’ or befriending someone of the opposite gender. The tables have surely turned over the years — from high-end fashion magazines to international ramps, spectacles of different styles and shapes have taken over. The good ol’ plain glasses are now, officially, a fashion statement. What more, people who’d switched to contact lenses are moving back to being four-eyed, just to make a style statement! And boy, do we love it or what? Image consultant Manjusha Maheshwari says, "For a person like me, who wears spectacles all the time, it has become more or less like jewellery since it’s on my face all the time. Spectacles are making a profound fashion statement these days and are definitely considered an important accessory when it comes to style.” There are a few rules that one needs to follow when it comes to wearing spectacles though. Image consultant Prasad Bidapa adds his bit, "The basic rule is that people with large faces should go for large frames and people with smaller faces should stick to ones of a suitable proportion. They say oval faces can pretty much wear any kind of frame and I think that people should also be game to experimenting till they hit upon the right frame. Women should avoid excessively heavy frames and try delicate and colourful ones instead; men, on the other hand, should avoid the delicate ones.” Manjusha too seems to agree that the shape of the face is critical in deciding the kind of spectacle one should wear. "Women look good in cherry red frames, while just imagine how cool a man would look in an indigo one?” offers Prasad. The frames you choose also depend on the kind of image you want to project. "While at work, it makes sense for people to stick to the blacks and browns and when outside, one can always have colourful ones. Also, there is definitely a demarcation when it comes to age and what kind of an occupation you’re in,” says Manjusha, going on to add, "Spectacles change the way you look and this demands that one puts some thought while taking a pick. Just don’t treat it with disdain.” "It’s better to invest in something that lasts for a while — go for frames by reliable and renowned brands that come with guarantee, instead of buying cheap products off the streets and unknown labels,” says Prasad. "I like the finish by Dior and use it for my everyday wear,” says Manjusha, who thinks that Amitabh Bachchan has an interesting collection of spectacles |
